Four Contractors Earn 2023 B2W Innovation Awards

Superior, Feller, Ajax and Jakes cited for ROI success with software for construction

Four construction companies bested the largest field of applicants to date and took home this year’s B2W Customer Innovation Awards in March. B2W began presenting the awards in three categories in 2017. Judges select winners from applications submitted by contractors throughout North America.

Best ROI with the B2W Platform

Superior Construction and Feller Enterprises tied for top honors in this category. Superior Construction, with operations in Florida and Indiana, demonstrated its cohesive use of B2W Estimate, Track, Maintain and Inform plus its integration of the B2W platform with the Vista accounting system from Viewpoint. At Feller Enterprises in Utah, estimator and project manager Travis Snow called the switch from spreadsheets to the B2W Estimate and Track combination a game changer.

“We’ve simplified operations, eliminated a lot of paper and saved countless hours spent on redundancies and double entry of data,” according to Superior learning and development manager Jessica Paske. “Improved accuracy in tracking hours, production and equipment utilization enhances our maintenance program and saves our projects money on a daily basis.”

Jessica Paske, with trophy, says B2W platform has saved countless hours spent on redundancies and double entry of data at Superior Construction.

At Feller, the B2W Platform allows the sitework contractor to now review project performance daily at the production account level and to easily review actual past performance and production rates when putting together new bids. “We’re bidding much more accurately and faster than with Excel and seeing profits stay very close to what we estimated,” says Snow. Foremen review the summary in the B2W Track app daily to stay close to the estimated cost and plan, and the company even sets goals and pays bonuses based on actual in-field performance versus what was estimated.

Feller Enterprises estimator and project manager Travis Snow says faster, more accurate estimating and detailed, daily performance reporting are the benefits of switching from spreadsheets to B2W.

Best ROI with a Single B2W Application

Working in partnership with B2W to deploy and optimize B2W Maintain was the key to winning in this category, according to Ajax Paving fleet manager Dan Maitland. “Our mission was to move from reactive to proactive maintenance and we have fully demonstrated the power and capabilities of B2W Maintain,” he explains. A 29 percent increase in accuracy for planning maintenance, a 31 percent reduction in priority-one emergency work orders and an 11 percent reduction in direct repair costs were among the results highlighted in the application. Ajax has operations in Florida and Michigan.

Most Innovative or New Use of B2W Software

After re-entering daily performance data into multiple complex spreadsheets originally required by the project owner and general contractors it was working for on a long-term pipeline project, Jakes Construction came up with a better idea. The company based in British Columbia demonstrated that customized reporting directly from B2W Track could provide the information in a more concise and user-friendly format. “This was a monumental turning point,” according to Derek Sterkenburg, an estimator. As a result, Jakes was able to triple its monthly work volume and revenues on the project while, at the same time, cutting reporting time. “We estimate that we have saved more than 2,000 hours of administrative time to date,” Sterkenberg says.
